Meet Performing Artist, Matthew Mole

Raised in Fish Hoek, Cape Town, he was given his first guitar at the age of 11, and his dad, who is himself a bit of a guitar-fundi, taught him to play. Matthew’s singing and song writing was only introduced at the age of 17, based on a suggestion from his dad to improve his playing. He has since learnt to play the ukulele, banjo, piano, organ, and drums, among others. After embarking on a college course in music production, Matthew began to realise his future was meant to involve music. During this time, he formed an electro-pop duo with his best friend and experimented with interesting and unexpected acoustic and electronic mixes. In 2010, Matthew began to perform solo shows with his guitar, kick drum, synths and electronics. He admits that his idea of playing live with a kick drum was perhaps inspired by indie folk legends, Mumford and Sons, who had an obvious impact on him at the time. In the same breath, many of his other influences are far more obscure, like guitarist Jónsi, from the Icelandic band Sigur Ros; New York indie band, The Freelance Whales, and British electronic producer and performer Gold Panda. In 2012, Matthew won the Converse Get Out Of The Garage contest, an accolade which rapidly propelled his career. His debut album, The Home We Built, was released in 2013, followed by his second album, Run, in 2016. Both albums topped the South African iTunes Chart upon their release and Runwas also nominated for Best Pop Album, Best Produced Album and Record of the Year at SAMA 23.
