Bulgaria, Vidin in Mar 2026 - Baba Vida medieval fortress

This is my one day exploration of the Bulgarian city of Vidin and more specifically the "Baba Vida" medieval fortress. The construction of the castle began in the 10th century at the place of the ancient Roman castell Bononia. Baba Vida served as part of Vidin's main defensive installation during the course of the Middle Ages and acted as the citadel of the most important fortress of northwestern Bulgaria. In 1397 it was conquered by the ottomans and served not only as a fortress but also as a weapon warehouse, prison and as a residence for Osman Pazvantoğlu. It was no longer used for defensive purposes since the end of the 18th century.
