The Dungeon Design Mistake Most DMs Make
A lot of referees build dungeons as a chain of encounters and then wonder why exploration feels flat. In this video, I break down the difference between encounter design and environment design, and why classic B/X dungeons often feel more alive because of it. This is really about a shift in prep. Instead of asking what happens in each room, start by asking what the place is, how it works, who uses it, and what pressures it puts on the party. Once you do that, the encounters start feeling like they belong there. If you run B/X, OSE, Labyrinth Lord, Swords & Wizardry, or general old-school fantasy, this is one of those design ideas that can clean up your prep fast.
