It's relatively easy to sex crayfish (crawfish) from a relatively early age & there are several methods to do so. Firstly, male crayfish grow larger than female crayfish. Our male Red Claw Crayfish (Yabbies) can reach a maximum size of 600 grams, whereas the females only reach a weight of up to 400 grams. Next are the claws. The male Yabbies have a larger pair of front claws with a red line running along the outside of them (this is usually visible in adolescent & mature males.) The abdomen is broader on a female Yabby, whereas the males are narrow. The tail section of crayfish is broader in females than in males to aid in holding eggs, known as berries. By far, the best way to identify male crayfish from female crayfish is by turning them over to check underneath. You will see 4 sets of walking legs. Counting from the top set of walking legs, count down to the third set. A female has two small holes. These holes are where her eggs come out before moving down towards her lower abdomen & tail section. For male crayfish, look to the fourth set of walking legs (the bottom pair). There, you will see two nodules protruding that aid reproduction. Crayfish are also commonly known as crawfish, crawdads, crawlfish, crawdads, freshwater lobsters, mountain lobsters, mudbugs, & yabbies. Crayfish are freshwater crustaceans resembling small lobsters (to which they are related). Taxonomically, they are members of the superfamilies Astacoidea and Parastacoidea. They breathe through feather-like gills. Some species are found in brooks and streams where freshwater runs, while others thrive in swamps, ditches, and paddy fields. Most crayfish cannot tolerate polluted water, although some species, such as Procambarus clarkii are hardier. Crayfish feed on animals and plants, living or decomposing, and detritus. Keeping crayfish at home is becoming ever more popular. This is within the pet industry & people are growing them for food.
