Statement of Need As primary care practitioners treat a variety of issues and the ongoing evolution of clinical guidelines and best practices, physicians need to learn the latest recommendations and patient protocols to provide optimum care for their patients. Objectives At the conclusion of this offering, the participant will be able to: 1. List the three main mechanisms of pain and their impact on acute and chronic pain. 2. Identify the optimal treatment options for acute non-low back musculoskeletal pain according to recent guidelines from the American College of Physicians and American Academy of Family Physicians. 3. Describe the primary mechanism of chronic pain and identify one pharmacologic (non-opioid) and one behavioral treatment to reduce pain and improve quality of life. Faculty Don R.
