To make matters worse, in 1972, at the counter-festival of the Venice Film Festival, Petri had made everyone an enemy, including left-wing critics, the so-called—and self-styled—"counterculture," for caricaturing the trade union linked to the PCI, the party, and left-wing intellectuals in his film The Working Class Goes to Heaven. "Everyone was polemical about my film: trade unionists, left-wing students, intellectuals, communist leaders, Maoists," he said. "Everyone would have wanted a work that supported their own arguments: instead, this is a film about the working class." The Gombagnih's hatred toward him reached the point that they literally wanted to burn his films.
