In this new episode of La Hora Liberal, Gonzalo Blumel and Ignacio Briones discuss the week's economic and political landscape with businessman Javier Álvarez, marked by the alarm raised by the drop in the Monthly Index of Economic Activity (Imacec) for May. According to the Central Bank, economic activity fell by 0.9% compared to the same month in 2025. With this result, Chile has now experienced five consecutive months of declining activity in seasonally adjusted terms, making the possibility of a technical recession an increasingly real risk. Adding to this scenario is the deterioration of the labor market. According to the National Employment Survey (ENE) from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the unemployment rate reached 9.4% during the March-May quarter of 2026, reinforcing the signs of a weakening economy. On another note, we discussed the Senate's rejection of the constitutional accusation filed by the Republican and National Libertarian blocs against former Finance Minister Nicolás Grau (FA) for alleged inconsistencies in fiscal calculations.
