ATONEMENT Atonement is the act by which reconciliation is made between God and humanity through the covering, removal, or payment for sin. In Christian theology, atonement is most fully expressed through the sacrificial death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, who gave Himself to restore mankind's relationship with God. "For the life of the flesh is in the blood... for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul." — Leviticus 17:11 🌿 What Does Atonement Mean? The word "atonement" carries the idea of: • Reconciliation • Restoration • Covering for sin • Making peace between two parties Simply put, atonement addresses the separation that sin caused between God and humanity. 📖 Atonement in the Old Testament Under the Old Covenant, God instituted sacrifices for the atonement of sin. Animals were offered as sacrifices, and their blood symbolically covered the sins of the people. One of the most significant observances was the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur), when the high priest made atonement for the nation. However, these sacrifices had to be repeated continually. ✝️ The Perfect Atonement Through Christ Jesus became the ultimate and perfect sacrifice for sin.
