In this video, I turn to one of the most striking confrontations in The Lord of the Rings, the meeting of Gandalf and the Witch-king at the Gate of Gondor. Rather than asking who might have triumphed had they not been interrupted, I focus on the transformation of both figures leading to this encounter. Each has been altered since their clash upon Weathertop: Gandalf reborn as the White Wizard, and the Witch-king magnified into a being of added demonic power. What does Tolkien reveal through their enhancement?
