On March 12, 1977, Father Rutilio Grande was murdered on a rural road in El Salvador along with Manuel Solórzano and Nelson Rutilio Lemus. They were on their way to El Paisnal to celebrate Mass. They never arrived. But that crime not only ended the life of a Jesuit priest. It also changed Óscar Arnulfo Romero forever. Until then, Romero was seen by many as a prudent, conservative, and quiet bishop. But upon seeing the body of his friend Rutilio Grande, something inside him broke. From then on, Romero became the voice of the poor, denounced state violence, and was assassinated three years later while celebrating Mass.
