Pawpaw is an unusual and, as yet, rare fruit tree in Russia, a worthy addition to the collection of gardeners and florists who appreciate exotic plants. Pawpaw (Latin: Asimina triloba) is a dicotyledonous flowering plant, a species of the genus Asimina in the family Annonaceae. In the wild, this species is native to North America, from southern Ontario (Canada) to Florida. In the west, its range extends to southeastern Nebraska and Texas. A deciduous tree or shrub, up to 15 m tall, usually 4-5 m. Young shoots are densely shaggy and pubescent; one-year-old shoots are glabrous, olive-brown, and shiny; two-year-old shoots are gray, with prominent lenticels. The fruits are 5-16 cm long, 3-7 cm wide, weighing from 20 to 500 g, with 2-8 fruits per axis. They are usually oblong, cylindrical, or round, usually slightly curved and angular. The seeds are brown, 2-2.5 cm long, with 10-12 seeds per fruit, arranged in two rows. The skin is thin and translucent, but easily peeled. The color changes from green to lemon-yellow as it ripens, and after the first frost, it turns brown or black. The flesh of a ripe pawpaw is soft, whitish-yellow or orange-yellow, with a cloyingly sweet taste and a pleasant pineapple-strawberry aroma. It is rich in fructose and sucrose, as well as trace elements. The taste of a ripe pawpaw is somewhat reminiscent of banana and mango.
