Gus Baha was a beloved student of the late charismatic cleric, KH Maemun Zubair (Mbah Moen) in Rembang, who is now very popular and has gone viral on YouTube. It's no wonder that when Gus Baha's mother, Hj Yuchanidz Nursalim, passed away on Wednesday (April 15, 2020), thousands, if not millions, of netizens expressed their deep condolences. Gus Baha's mother passed away at the age of 73 and was treated at Dr. Soetrasno Regional Hospital in Rembang for an illness. So who exactly is Gus Baha, the cleric who memorized 30 chapters of the Quran and is now a YouTube sensation? As reported by Surya.co.id from Wikipedia, KH Ahmad Bahauddin Nursalim, better known as Gus Baha, was a Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) cleric from Narukan, Kragan, Rembang, Central Java. Gus Baha is known as a scholar of exegesis with profound knowledge of the Quran. As reported by Surya.co.id from the Ma'had Aly Jakarta website, in an article titled: "Gus Baha; An Expert in Exegesis Educated by Indonesian Scholars," Gus Baha is described as a genuine expert in exegesis trained by Indonesian scholars. Gus Baha is an expert in exegesis, a member of the National Council of Experts in Exegesis, with a non-formal background, and an expert in exegesis who studied only in Indonesia. On one occasion, Professor Quraisy Syihab said, "It's hard to find someone who understands and memorizes the details of the Quran, including the detailed jurisprudence implied in its verses, like Mr. Baha." Gus Baha is the son of a Quranic scholar, KH Nursalim Al-Hafizh from Narukan, Kragan, Rembang, Central Java, a village on the north coast of Java. Nursalim was a student of KH Arwani Al-Hafizh Kudus and KH Abdullah Salam Al-Hafizh Pati. His paternal line, from his great-grandfather to the fourth generation, is a line of accomplished Quranic scholars. His maternal lineage, however, shows that Gus Baha is descended from the extended Lasem cleric family, the Bani Mbah Abdurrahman Basyaiban or Mbah Sambu, whose shrine is located in the Lasem Grand Mosque, about a half-hour drive from downtown Rembang. Education As a child, Gus Baha began his studies in Quranic scholarship and memorization under the tutelage of his father. At a very young age, he completed the entire Quran and its recitation, under strict guidance from his father. Indeed, the reading habits of Mbah Arwani's students were characterized by strict adherence to tajwid and makharijul huruf (letter pronunciation). As he entered his teens, Kiai Nursalim entrusted Gus Baha to study and serve under Syaikhina KH Maimoen Zubair (Mbah Moen) at the Al Anwar Islamic Boarding School in Karangmangu, Sarang, Rembang, about 10 km east of Narukan. It was at Al-Anwar that Gus Baha excelled in Islamic studies such as fiqh, hadith, and tafsir. This is evident in the several prestigious scholarly mandates he held during his time at Al-Anwar, including Rais Fathul Muin and Chairman of the Maarif (Islamic Board of Directors) within the Al-Anwar leadership. While there, Gus Baha completed the memorization of Sahih Muslim, complete with its texts, narrators, and sanad (translations). In addition to Sahih Muslim, Gus Baha also memorized the Fathul Muin and Arabic grammar books such as Imrithi and Alfiah Ibn Malik. According to one narration, of all the students he memorized, Gus Baha was the first student of Al Anwar, holding the record for the most memorized books in his era. In fact, every discussion he attended was immediately rejected by his peers, as he was considered below the level of the average student due to his depth of knowledge, breadth of insight, and extensive memorization. In addition to his distinguished scholarship, Gus Baha was also a prominent figure. Click this link to see the rest of Gus Baha's biography. https://bit.ly/3eUZMER
