GEORGIA Lagodekhi National Park Hiking

We went hiking in the Lagodekhi National Park in the far north east of Georgia, close to the border with Dagestan and Azerbaijan. The Lagodekhi Protected Area is a huge area of unspoiled natural beauty that encompasses the park. From the edge of Lagodekhi town, the park extends through the forest to a higher alpine region and the snow capped mountains that are the natural border between Georgia, Russia and Azerbaijan. It is a beautiful region with a vast array of flora and fauna including brown bears, lynx, wolves and the caucasian tur. We only skimmed the surface of this huge area. Trekking in the end of may, there had been a lot of snow melt and heavy rain that had washed away the bridges so we couldn't complete our hike to the Black Grouse waterfall as the bridges had been washed away. We were told by the very informative people at the park information centre at the entrance that the bridges would be rebuilt and the trail would be usable by the beginning of the summer season. It's a great place to trek. It doesn't cost anything to enter the park and there are a selection of trails to chose from. Ours was the shortest, a 4-5 hour hike in total. There is also a very interesting 3 day hike up to black rock lake on the Dagestan border for the adventurous. You can hire all the equipment you need from the park office and trek independently if you wish.
