HP 3320B Frequency Synthesizer 1972

This Hewlett Packard 3320B is a classic frequency synthesizer from around 1972, and it’s a beautiful piece of engineering, In this video, we dive into the Hewlett Packard Model 3320B Frequency Synthesizer, a high-precision instrument introduced in 1972. Covering a wide frequency range from 0.01 Hz to 13 MHz, this unit is exceptionally well-designed and packed with fascinating technical details. Key Engineering Highlights: Precision Leveling: Uses a sophisticated level feedback loop with balanced thermal power detectors for rock-solid output stability. Advanced Architecture: Features multiple ADC systems and specialized circuitry for high-accuracy signal generation. Remote Control: Includes options for a BCD remote interface, allowing digital control over frequency and even power output. My unit is not with this remote option. The Repair: The fault in this particular unit was straightforward to diagnose thanks to HP’s modular design. The -15V rail was down due to a shorted capacitor in module A10. Because all modules are seated in lovely sockets, I was able to pull them one by one to quickly isolate the faulty board and bring this vintage synthesizer back to life.
