This services passes over this highest point on Britain's Mainline National Rail network at around 2:09:50. LNER services on this route operate once a day in each direction as part of the Inverness to London Kings Cross Highland Chieftain service via the East Coast Main Line. LNER services all have the same Highland Mainline calling pattern other than the southbound Sunday Morning service which calls at all stations other than Dalwhinnie. ScotRail operate additional Edinburgh to Inverness services with more services from Stirling onwards from Glasgow Queen Street. Slower Edinburgh to Perth services operate hourly via Kirkcaldy and Fife. Edinburgh to Dunblane stopping services operate every half hour serving all stations. Gleneagles is skipped by most ScotRail Inverness services but is served by LNER. Caledonian Sleeper operate a daily service along this route from London Euston via the West Coast Main Line however this is not available for passengers from Edinburgh with the previous stop being Preston. At Edinburgh there is interchange with other LNER, ScotRail, TransPennine Express, Avanti West Coast, Lumo and Caledonian Sleeper services. At Haymarket there is interchange with Edinburgh Trams to Newhaven and Edinburgh Airport. At Inverness onward connections to the Kyle of Lochalsh line and the Far North line to Thurso and Wick. The rolling stock on this route for LNER is 9 carriage Hitachi Azuma class 800 trains which feature both standard and first class accommodation, these trains operate on electric as far as Stirling where they switch to diesel operation. ScotRail services on this route are formed of a mix of Inter7City classs 43+mark 3 carriages, class 170 Turbostar and class 158 Express Sprinter trains. This route is electrified with overhead electrification as far as Dunblane and is unelectrified for the remained of the route to Inverness. This route is double track throughout as far as Perth, from Perth to Inverness the route is a mix of double track and single track with passing loops at most stations except Newtonmore. The Highland Mainline form Perth to Inverness passes Druimuachdar summit which is the highest point on mainline railways in the UK at 452 metres above sea level.
