Organic Chemistry II CHEM-2425 Ch 20 Carboxylic Acids and Derivatives Part 1

Chapter 20 Lecture Video Part 1 Section 20.1 Introduction: Identify carboxylic acids, acid chlorides, acid anhydrides, esters (including lactones), and amides (including lactams). Classify amides as primary, secondary or tertiary. Section 20.2 Structure and Bonding: Determine the stability of carboxylic acid derivatives based on the basicity of the leaving group. Section 20.3 Nomenclature: Name acid chlorides, anhydrides, esters, amides, and nitriles according to the IUPAC system. Section 20.4 Physical and Spectroscopic Properties: Identify the structural characteristics that lead to the physical properties of acid derivatives. Identify acid derivatives by their characteristic spectroscopic absorptions in IR, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR. Section 20.5 Interesting Acid Derivatives: Brief discussion of some interesting acid derivatives. Section 20.6 Nucleophilic Acyl Substitution: Draw the mechanism for nucleophilic acyl substitution using curved arrows. Determine the products of a nucleophilic acyl substitution. Predict the reactivity of an acid derivative towards nucleophilic acyl substitution based on leaving group ability. These are the lectures that I use in my Organic Chemistry II course. The textbook I use is Smith, Janice "Organic Chemistry", McGraw Hill, 6th Ed., 2020, ISBN13: 9781260119107. Some images used in this video come from that textbook.
