At the end of the ceremony the Drum Major, Colour Sergeant Barden, as hard-nosed a Londoner as ever served the Regiment, marched up to ask permission to march off from the reviewing Officer. This was the last Commanding Officer of 1 Queen's Surreys and the first Commanding Officer of 1 QUEEN'S, Colonel JW Sewell. Those watching could clearly see that it took all Barden's self discipline to master his emotions as he came forward , but even he could not hold back the tears. He was not alone."
