We’ve Completely Misunderstood Ireland’s Most Popular Song
The Cranberries’ “Zombie” is one of the most recognisable Irish songs ever recorded, arguably the most popular modern song to come out of Ireland. But behind the popular chorus, distorted guitars and Dolores O’Riordan’s unmistakable voice is the story of the 1993 Warrington bombing, where three-year-old Johnathan Ball and twelve-year-old Tim Parry were killed. In this video, I look at what inspired Dolores O’Riordan to write Zombie, what the lyrics and the reference to 1916 may mean, and why the song sounded so different from The Cranberries’ earlier music. I also explore the arguments around whether Zombie was anti-IRA, anti-war or simply a direct response to innocent people being killed during the Troubles. Most importantly, this is the story of how one specific tragedy became a song understood far beyond Ireland. A song shaped by grief, anger and exhaustion at violence repeating itself... and one that eventually became the most popular song to ever come out of Ireland. _________________________________________ 🎩 Check out the Irish Music shop! 👉 www.shop.insideirishmusic.com 💚 Join on Patreon AD free videos and more: 👉 / insideirishmusic 💚 Join the Channel Members! 👉 / @insideirishmusic ☕ Buy me a coffee (or a pint?): 👉 https://coff.ee/insideirishmusic 🍻 Join the craic on Discord: 👉 / discord 🎶 Learn Irish Tunes with Trad Chords*: 👉 https://tradchords.org?aff=zmrG8v *Create a free account.
