When Pilot Success Expands The Deal Table

For more than 80 years, the fumed silica industry has relied on production methods built around silicon tetrachloride. HPQ Silicon believes its Fumed Silica Reactor (FSR) offers a different route: commercial-grade fumed silica made directly from quartz. That is why Bernard Tourillon's latest interview matters. HPQ's July 8, 2026 press release confirmed the pilot hit its two objectives: reliably producing commercial-grade fumed silica from quartz and generating the engineering data needed to evaluate future commercial facilities. But the interview added the bigger context: pilot success did not narrow HPQ's path. It expanded the commercial conversation. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW Pilot Validated: The pilot showed the FSR can produce commercial-grade fumed silica from quartz, including pilot-scale "150" grade. Engineering Confidence: PyroGenesis completed a detailed review of pilot data, strengthening confidence in operating parameters and commercial-scale economics. Commercial Discussions Expanded: HPQ had announced a non-binding MOU for a 1,000 tonne-per-year plant, but Bernard said the opportunity is now broader, involving new groups, old groups and parties under NDA. Evonik Addressed: Bernard said they remain involved and communications continue, but asked HPQ to be more discreet with its name publicly. Multiple Deployment Paths: Options include joint ventures, licensing, royalty-based partnerships and company-owned facilities. PyroGenesis Transaction Advancing: The two are finalizing the deal under which PyroGenesis acquires 50% of HPQ Silica Polvere while remaining exclusive equipment supplier. STRATEGIC IMPLICATIONS The interview clarified why HPQ's original MOU timeline shifted. Bernard framed the delay not as a lack of interest but as a broader opportunity set requiring more work before HPQ commits to a structure. HPQ had expected to close MOU negotiations by the end of Q2 2026. Since then, pilot completion, independent validation and engineering confidence have expanded the opportunities being evaluated. HPQ now understands what the technology looks like at scale, including cost and price points, giving it confidence to re-engage existing parties, approach new participants and weigh multiple structures. Bernard also noted fumed silica requires a more deliberate process than HPQ's battery business, since it serves large-volume markets where partners must understand scale, logistics, sales channels and financing. On PyroGenesis, the arrangement is clear: it gives up its lifetime royalty for 50% of HPQ Silica Polvere, with remaining work tied to legal and accounting matters. A future spinout remains possible once the deal closes. CEO Bernard Tourillon: "The pilot program has demonstrated that our Fumed Silica Reactor can produce commercial-grade fumed silica directly from quartz and generated the engineering data required to evaluate multiple commercial pathways with significantly greater confidence. Our focus is selecting the optimal deployment strategy while positioning the FSR as a scalable industrial platform." INVESTOR TAKEAWAY HPQ's fumed silica story is no longer just about proving the FSR can make commercial-grade material. The opportunity has expanded beyond the original MOU because HPQ now has more pilot data, greater cost confidence and a broader view of where the technology fits, with discussions active across multiple parties, including Evonik. Importantly, HPQ has not announced a definitive commercial project. Management is still negotiating and completing the required work, and cautions there is no assurance any agreement or project will proceed. For investors, the story has shifted from "does it work?" to "what is the right deal?"
