Ducks Green & Kelshall Lane (Therfield 36) HE 50, Hertfordshire - Motorbike Trail Riding in England

A nice interesting lane in Hertfordshire to the south west of Royston, with two names, Ducks Green in the north, Kelshall Lane in the south. Some odd facts about this lane, so I've added a commentary to explain a few things. Starts across a small green in Therfield village, which has been heavily rutted by four wheeled traffic. I do recall the time that the county council offered to surface this short (100 metres) stretch across the green but local villagers objected saying it would spoil the character of the green. Quite how having a rutted, muddy line straight across the middle preserves 'the character of the green' i'm realy not sure. This short stretch is most probably AMBER in grade but the rest of the lane is certainly GREEN. As the difficult stretch is so short, most riders should be able to get through to the easier stuff, so I have graded it GREEN overall The only exit to the lane at the south is to continue on Notley Lane (Therfield Byway 41 and Sandon Byway 45) please see my video (HE 51). the byway does contine southwards from the junction but there is no public right of way across the short stretch of Chapel Green to link up with the tarmac road (also confusingly called Chapel Green). Therfield 36 is 1.87 km long (1.16 miles) but in combination with Therfield 41/Sandon 45 it makes a through route of 3.66 km or 2.27 miles. It used to be possible to leave the byway onto an unclassified road (UCR) called Keepers Lane, heading towards the village of Kelshall. Unfortunately at a public enquiry it was deemed that the last 100 yards before meeting Therfield 36 did not hold vehicular rights so is now a Restricted Byway, this makes Keepers Lane a dead end for vehicles, a completely ridiculous decision as clearly this was once a through route for all users. But of course common sense rarely has a place in access law!!!
