Portavogie Prawn Catch At The Harbour - ( N Irish Fishing Short Documentary and Scenery On Film)
An interview with two local veteran fishermen, one now a seller to the local market and the other still on the boats. The former is picking up a few cases of fresh prawns and the latter a few herring, caught in the prawn nets, for his dinner. In this film you see contract crews from Ghana and India. They spend up to a year here, work hard on the boats and make some great money which goes a long way back home. The rapport between local and foreign fishermen is obvious - things are working really well at Portavogie! The film finishes with scenes from the expansive, dune lined beach at Kirkistown, just a short drive further along the Peninsula from this harbour. If you visit the harbour, make sure to use the carpark as the fishermen and associated workers need to drive to the boats and warehouse at the harbour itself, as well as any emergency service crews. Then consider a walk along that beach with it's clear views out to Scotland across the Irish Sea.
