Panasonic Lumix FZ1000 and G7 with 100-300mm lens test

With the FZ1000 having an optical maximum zoom of 400mm EFL I quite often use the i.zoom feature to extend this to 600mm. In this video i tested the FZ1000 at the native 400mm optical zoom against the new G7 fitted with the Panasonic 100-300mm f4:5.6 lens set to give 400mm EFL. I then added i.zoom to the FZ1000 to extend the zoom to 600mm EFL and tested that against the optically zoomed 600mm EFL on the G7 and then finally set the maximum i.zoom on the FZ1000to give 800mm EFL and 1.3 EX Zoom on the G7 to give 800mmEFL Of course using i.zoom doesn't have the same optical characteristics as a 600mm EFL lens would have so the depth of field is the same as at 40mm EFL. The G7 having a larger sensor has less depth of field and this is very apparent in the video. The G7 was used at an aperture of F9 (which was the lens sweet spot at this distance (40 metres) and focal lengths used) and the FZ1000 was at F6.3 You can pause the video during the split screen comparisons to closely examine the differences between the two frames. The video was filmed using the G7 in 4K video mode and converted to 1080p with the 100-300mm lens set to 500mm EFL My Photoblog is here http://www.grahamhoughton.com
