German Cultural Heritage in Georgia: Past and Present. Oliver Reisner

This talk will give us an overview of the history of the resettlement of Piestists from the region of Swabia in the Kingdom of Wurttemberg from 1817 onwards to the South Caucasus, mainly into nowadays Southern Georgia (Kvemo Kartli province) until the deportation during World War II to Kazakhstan. In a second step, Oliver will present the cultural heritage that they left behind, what survived, and how it can be used for future activities between Georgia and Germany as a cultural bridge. About the Speaker: Oliver Reisner is a professor in European and Caucasian Studies at Ilia State University Tbilisi (Georgia). He received his Dr. Phil. degree in East European History for a thesis on nation formation in Georgia at Georg-August-University Göttingen (2000), coordinated the MA program “Central Asia / Caucasus” at Humboldt University Berlin (2000-2003).
