ERN eUROGEN Webinar 144: Long term continence issues in Hirschsprung disease
This webinar was presented on the 24th of June as part of the colorectal webinar series that is organised by ERN eUROGEN and ERNICA. The webinar was presented by Dr Alessio Pini Prato who is a specialist in Pediatric Surgery, Director of Mother and Child Health Department, Director of Pediatric Surgery Unit at the AOU SS Antonio e Biagio e Cesare Arrigo hospital in Alessandria, Italy. He was accompanied by Dr Silvia Tufano who is a specialist in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine with clinical and research focus on pediatric and pelvic perineal rehabilitation. She works at the Rehabilitation Unit, of the same centre in Alessandria, Italy. During the webinar, the following was discussed: Hirschsprung's disease (HSCR) is a rare congenital disorders of the intestine. Functional prognosis is poor after surgical treatment and the impact on patients' quality of life is significant due to bowel dysfunctions such as constipation or fecal incontinence. Incontinence could be the consequence of different aspects related to weak anal sphincter and perineal muscles, intestinal hypermotility, or constipation with overflow incontinence. A pelvic floor rehabilitation program with multidisciplinary care can improve bowel function, lowering the rate of faecal incontinence and allowing easier socialization. Pelvic floor Muscle (PFM) training helps children to understand how to coordinate and relax the PFM. These exercises are meant to be performed also at home to consolidate the improvement. A personalised and non-invasive rehabilitation program already demonstrated good outcomes for congenital bowel disease, improving the management of continence in paediatric population.
