In March we traveled to Virginia Beach and had the opportunity to dine at some of favorite regional restaurants for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We loved the food at Sunnyside Café, Rigoletto Italian Bakery & Café, Repeal Bourbons and Burgers, as well as Murphy’s Irish Pub. We want to share with you those experiences. While the sunrise over the ocean was breathtaking, it was very cold and windy. The reason for our visit during this time was so we could witness our Joella conquer her first half marathon during the Shamrock Marathon Weekend. Virginia Beach has a beautiful shoreline that meets the water with a family friendly atmosphere and is a favorite during spring break and the summer months. There is a long concrete boardwalk along the beach and lots of shops within a short stroll. Fortunate for us, the city is also home to a flourishing local culinary scene, giving us an opportunity to have some excellent dining experiences during our stay. Open for breakfast and lunch, Sunnyside Café and Restaurant is run by a New Jersey family that takes an extensive American-style menu and mixes in seafood twists along with spirited drinks. Their ingredients were fresh and their execution was spot on. On the south side of Virginia Beach is a family-owned venue called Rigoletto Italian Bakery and Café. The ancestry hails from Naples, Italy and uses recipes handed down from generations to turn out incredible pastries, cakes, paninis, pastas & breakfast. Although we experienced a fantastic breakfast, it is their authentic sandwiches that landed them on Food Network’s Diners, Drive Ins and Dives. The tasty treats and meals this place turns out is no joke. They strive for the ultimate bourbon & burger experience by using exclusive Mid-Atlantic ingredients, including local mushrooms, free-range eggs, vegetables, and fresh herbs. House-made Korean kimchi, bourbon chili, and award-winning burgers are mated with small-batch liquors and handcrafted cocktails. THIS is how you celebrate the end of prohibition.
