In this video, I take a look at some of New Zealand’s most poisonous and potentially deadly plants — several of which have a history of serious poisoning incidents and fatalities. We explore the main plant defence strategies, the toxins involved, and the plants associated with them. The video looks in detail at poisonous New Zealand native plants, outlining some of the most toxic species that can cause harm to people, pets, and livestock. I also include brief historical accounts of poisoning cases, along with discussion of traditional Māori knowledge and uses of certain plants, reflecting how people historically learned what was safe and what was not. This video is intended as educational material to raise awareness, assist plant identification, and encourage safe handling of plants in gardens, bush areas, and public spaces.
