On November 1, 1963, when the coup d'état rang out in Saigon, Ngo Dinh Nhu's four children were in different places: the eldest, Le Thuy, was with her mother on a trip to the United States, while the three younger children—Trac, 14 years old; Quynh, 11 years old; and Le Quyen, 4 years old—were hiding in the Da Lat forest with two bodyguards, unaware that their father and uncle had been killed. From that night, the four children of First Lady Tran Le Xuan began more than sixty years of exile — none of them ever returned to their homeland. In this video, The Legacy of the Republic of Vietnam reconstructs for the first time the full fates of all four children: Ngo Dinh Le Thuy — the eldest daughter who died in a car accident in Paris in 1967 at the age of 22; Ngo Dinh Trac — the eldest son who quietly rebuilt his life in Italy until his death in 2022; Ngo Dinh Quynh — the second son who lived in seclusion in Brussels and who painted his father with a sun; and Ngo Dinh Le Quyen — the youngest daughter who became a Doctor of Law, Director of Immigration at Caritas Rome, who resolutely refused to change her Italian citizenship for many years, and passed away suddenly in April 2012 — the same month as her eldest sister and mother. This is not a story about politics or the right and wrong of history. This is the story of four children who did not choose their own destiny — and how they lived with that destiny for over sixty years, through unfamiliar European cities, through fateful Aprils, through losses few families have had to endure. The video content is based on original materials, the memoir of Mrs. Ngo Dinh Le Quyen (""Au bout de la nuit""), the posthumous memoir ""White Pebble"" of Mrs. Tran Le Xuan, the book ""Republic of Vietnam and the Ngo Dinh Family"" compiled by Ngo Dinh Quynh and Ngo Dinh Le Quyen in 2013, and numerous carefully cross-referenced international press sources. ───── 📌 VIDEO CONTENT: 00:00 — Opening the File: Four Children in the Mansion of Power 08:15 — The Coup Night: The Escape in the Dalat Forest 16:30 — Beginning the Exile: Paris, Then Rome 25:00 — Le Thuy: The Eldest Daughter Dies on a Paris Night 33:20 — Ngo Dinh Trac: The Eldest Son Puts the Past Behind Him 41:45 — Ngo Dinh Quynh: The Son Living in Reclusion in Brussels 50:10 — Ngo Dinh Le Quyen: The Daughter Who Did Not Change Her Nationality 59:30 — The April Curse: When Death Repeats in the Same Month 68:00 — Over 60 Years of Exile: What Did They Retain? 76:20 — Heritage and Memory ───── References: Wikipedia (English and Vietnamese), Corriere della Sera (Italy), Time (USA), Law Journal, RFA Vietnamese, Thanh Nien Newspaper, Tuoi Tre Newspaper, Cong An Nhan Dan Newspaper, VietnamNet, and many other sources from the Vietnamese diaspora community.
