Adding Vibrato to the Clarinet - Stranger on the Shore

This tutorial looks at the technique required to build a controlled, natural vibrato into clarinet playing. Simple exercises are demonstrated using just the mouthpiece, reed, ligature and tuning barrel of the Bb clarinet in sync with an electronic tuner and metronome. The 1961 classic 'Stranger on the Shore' by Acker Bilk is discussed as an example of how vibrato style can date a piece of music but also how vibrato can identify and link to the personal signature sound of a performer. A version of 'Stranger on the Shore' is filmed close up to the embouchure to show how a small movement of the jaw creates the necessary fluctuation in pitch that is known more commonly as vibrato.
