The Pentagon's assessment was not pessimistic. It was mathematical. The western Iraqi desert in January 1991 was 200 kilometres behind enemy lines, patrolled, cold enough to kill without fire, and dense with mobile Scud launchers that NATO's air assets had spent weeks failing to locate. Sending men in on foot was the option the Americans had already ruled out. The SAS took it anyway. No air support. No extraction guarantee. No margin for the kind of mechanical failure or navigational error that ends patrols in that terrain. They went in, located the launchers that coalition air power had missed, and destroyed them. The Scuds stopped flying. The Pentagon filed the after-action report and said very little publicly about how the problem had actually been solved. The mission the Americans called unsurvivable.
