Antibiotic use is a key driver of antimicrobial resistance. Development of multi-drug resistance in bacteria poses a serious threat to both animal and human health. This talk will discuss the rational use of antibiotics in small animal medicine. Important questions including when antibiotics are necessary, how to optimise antibiotic selection and how to share this message with colleagues and clients, will be addressed. Fergus Allerton (BSc BVSc CertSAM Dip. ECVIM-CA MRCVS) is a European Veterinary Specialist in Small Animal Internal Medicine working at Willows Veterinary Centre and Referral Services, Solihull, United Kingdom.
