What's driving 500,000+ people to self-deport from the U.S.?

More than half a million immigrants in the U.S. are protected from deportation and are allowed to live and work in the country legally due to DACA (the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program). However, they are still considered undocumented and don't have a path to legal status. Established in 2012 by President Obama, DACA protects those brought to the U.S. as children — but it does not grant citizenship. Over 800,000 individuals have benefited from DACA, obtaining driver’s licenses, higher education, jobs, financial independence, and more. Despite broad public support for a pathway to citizenship, Congress has repeatedly tried and failed to reach a legislative solution, leaving DACA recipients in legal uncertainty.
