Faxon Firearms ARAK-21: First Look

In this video, I take a first look at the Faxon Firearms ARAK-21—one of the most unusual upper receiver systems ever brought to the AR-15 market. We start with the history of Faxon Firearms and the ARAK-21. Long before it was a firearms company, Faxon was a family-owned precision machining business in Ohio, producing components for industries ranging from aerospace and defense to medical and energy. The ARAK-21 wasn't a product that came after Faxon Firearms was established—it was one of the projects that helped create the company in the first place. We'll look at how the concept originated, the path from Faxon Machining to Faxon Firearms, and how the ARAK-21 evolved over the years. From there, we take a closer look at the ARAK-21 itself. More than anything else, this is a story about the upper receiver. The ARAK-21 is a self-contained system that combines a long-stroke piston operating system with AR-15 lower compatibility, creating a platform that borrows ideas from both the AR and AK worlds while remaining something entirely its own. We'll break down the design, controls, operating system, and the features that have made the platform stand out for over a decade. Then we head to the range. On the range, I run the ARAK-21 for impressions on recoil, handling, ergonomics, and overall shootability. The big question is whether this unique upper receiver system offers something meaningfully different from a traditional AR-15. This isn't meant to be a full review, but it should provide a solid introduction to the history, design, and shooting characteristics of one of the most interesting alternative AR upper receiver systems ever developed.
