From the sleek rise of Brightline to the sun-soaked highways that define Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach, South Florida’s transportation system has always blended old and new. But while luxury high-speed trains grab headlines, the humble Tri-Rail has carried workers, students, and families through the daily grind. Today, however, this essential service is staring down its biggest crisis yet, one that could bring the system to a screeching halt. We’ll break it all down for you in this episode of Great Train Speed. Tri-Rail at a Crossroads It's Over! Florida's Tri-Rail is in BIG TROUBLE... Tri-Rail is a commuter rail service linking Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach in Florida, United States. The “Tri” in its name refers to the three counties it serves, Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade. The system is managed by the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority. It operates along the former Miami Subdivision of CSX Transportation, which is now fully owned by the Florida Department of Transportation. The 80-mile line includes 19 stations along Florida’s southeast coast, providing key connections to Amtrak at multiple stations, to Metrorail at the Metrorail Transfer Station, Miami Airport Station, and Miami Central, and to Brightline at Miami Central. In 2024, Tri-Rail recorded 4.5 million trips, averaging about 15,800 weekday riders as of the second quarter of 2025. A second line, known as the Coastal Link, has been proposed for the Florida East Coast Railway corridor. This line would extend from Toney Penna Station in Jupiter to Miami Central in Downtown Miami, adding commuter service between the downtown areas of cities along the corridor. Together with the existing line, the expanded system is projected to reach nearly 30,000 daily riders, or about 9 million passengers annually, effectively doubling Tri-Rail’s current ridership. It's Over! Florida's Tri-Rail is in BIG TROUBLE... But even though plans for the second line are already in place and current ridership has been strong, Tri-Rail is now facing a major hurdle with its very first line. So what exactly is happening, and how could this challenge impact the entire system? Let’s break it down in the next part, and if you’re finding this interesting, don’t forget to hit that subscribe button so you won’t miss any updates from our channel. Tri-Rail’s hurdles Tri-Rail is facing a financial emergency that could force it out of business within the next two years. The system is now at risk of a full shutdown by June 2027 after the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) slashed its annual subsidy from as much as $62 million in the past to just $15 million.
