How to write measurable learning outcomes
Our course outcomes are goals developed to support our program departments and institutional mission and purpose. Well-defined and measurable outcomes are important in providing a clear focus and direction for teaching and learning. Basic course design - 0:17 Specific and Measurable Outcomes - 1:49 Bloom’s Taxonomy (Behaviors) - 4:33 Applying Bloom's to the exploration of an apple - 5:29 Bloom’s Table - 9:58 Course outcomes and assessments are fundamental components of course design as we answer the questions: What are we trying to get students to do? How well are they able to do it? A well-written outcome will actually serve as a blueprint to establish the optimal type and scope of assessments in a course or module. While an ideal component of education is that students "learn" core concepts, learning outcomes focus exclusively on a student's ability to demonstrate knowledge, skills, and abilities. Thus learning outcomes do not measure knowledge and understanding - they measure learning behaviors and demonstration of course content mastery.
