Parlor Guitar Comparison: X vs Fan-Bracing & TurboTail
Jacob compares 2 guitars: The Art & Lutherie Ami X-braced steel string parlor guitar VERSUS the Godin Motif fan-braced nylon string parlor guitar that has been converted to steel strings using the TurboTail. Both guitars are made in the same factory by the same company with the same body size, same materials, same 12 fret neck. Obviously, the nylon string Motif has much lighter bracing. In fact, we couldn't possibly have installed steel strings on it without the TurboTail. The TurboTail transfers the tension load of the steel strings from the delicate soundboard to the structural tailblock. This allows for much lighter bracing. Lighter bracing means that the soundboard can do what it was designed to do, amplify and temper the vibrations of the strings, without having to provide a structural anchor for the strings. The quarters you see on the bridge are part of ongoing bridge weight experiments. Quarters weigh 5.5 grams. At present, we are experimenting with adding between 10 and 15 grams of weight to the bridge to help to bring down the resonant frequency of the soundboard. We receive ongoing feedback from players to help us to arrive at decisions such as this and other refinements of our demo guitars. Thanks for watching and commenting.
