How To Do Uki-Goshi (Floating Hip Throw)
Uki-Goshi or floating hip throw (half hip throw) is one of the original 40 throws of Judo developed by Jigoro Kano (the founder of Judo). It is classified as a hip technique, also known as Koshi-Waza and is used for both demonstration purposes (Nage no Kata) and in combative situations such as competitions. I I execute the throw as a left handed thrower, so if you're right sided you would just do the exact opposite with what I am demonstrating with this technique. First, pull the person being thrown (uke) down and up with your arms (both lapel hand and sleeve hand) and towards you putting them off balance. Uke should be on both of his toes with his heels off the ground. Place your left arm around his back across the other side of his belt at the same time stepping in with your left foot to the side of his right foot and your right foot coming around in a semi-circle motion outside and next to uke's right leg. As you do this transitional movement with the feet, you want to make sure your left foot is on the floor with only the ball of the foot on the floor and not the heel and pivoting all around with both feet facing forward. You should be close to the side of uke's hip with your knees a bit bent almost in a quarter squat position. When you're already placed in position you would then pop your knees and hips up and twist uke around using your back and hip as a pivot point. You are slightly sideways to uke rather than completely giving his back. When you finish throwing uke always make sure to look at the direction of the throw, which would be looking to the sky.
