A robot anime that was canceled in Japan was hailed as a "masterpiece" in America. And they even funded a sequel! It's a true story that sounds too good to be true. "The Big O" was born in 1999. Its unique combination of film noir and Japanese special effects was ahead of its time in Japan. Why did Americans go wild for this work? Why wasn't it well-received in Japan? And what was the cross-border reversal that led it from cancellation to "conclusion"? Zundamon, a robot anime fan, explains the whole story. 🤖 ■Big O Trivia 〇It all started as a "toy proposal": Keiichi Sato's original concept was a toy project in which a man in black destroys a Gotham City-like town with a giant robot. He brought it to Bandai's hobby division, but it was rejected as "unsellable." However, Bandai Visual picked it up, and it saw the light of day as an anime. The opening theme was too similar to Queen's: For the opening song of the first season, the director requested the composer make it sound like Queen's Flash Gordon theme. However, out of respect, the composer made it sound too similar, resulting in the unusual transfer of the song's rights to Queen. While it was included in Super Robot Wars D, it was no longer available for Super Robot Wars Z. Sunrise also produced "Batman": In fact, Sunrise, the studio behind Big O, was also involved in the animation of "Batman: The Animated Series." The reason Big O is called the "animated Batman" may be not only because of its appearance, but also because of the shared DNA at the production level. Origin of the "40-Year-Old Memory Loss" theme: The story's key theme is "a town that lost its memory 40 years ago." One theory is that this comes from director Kazuyoshi Katayama, who was exactly 40 years old at the time of production.
