JB Phillips - The True Greatness Of God [Full Album]

From the Vinyl Album J. B. Phillips - The True Greatness Of God 0:00 The True Greatness Of God 16:51 A Message To Youth Few modern authors in the field of religion have made such a wide impact on the English-speaking world has J. B. Phillips. Is translations of the New Testament into modern English, together with his numerous other books, have dramatically helped to make Christianity relevant to countless numbers of people who otherwise pictured it as perhaps antiquated and irrelevant to modern times. Now the impact of this man takes on a new dimension as his personality and voice are captured on this recording. In his sermon “The True Greatness of God”, the Reverand Phillips makes an eloquent and inspiring case for the living God who was revealed in Jesus Christ. He's skillfully attacks immature and inadequate ideas of religion and challenges his listeners to a mature and honest thinking. “A Message to Youth” was specifically delivered to a London youth club and was tape recorded for circulation to other youth clubs throughout England. Some preliminary remarks have been deleted from this message at the beginning and, therefore, it starts somewhat abruptly, in the midst of some of the Reverend Phillips introductory remarks. In this message the Reverend Phillips appeals to young people to take the trouble to seriously read the New Testament as grown up people and study the evidence for the existence of Jesus Christ and the validity of Christianity. He speaks with the confidence of one who is positively convinced that a fair study of the evidence will lead a person to accept the claims of Jesus Christ. J. B. Phillips is born in 1906 in Barnes, a southwestern suburb of London. He was educated at Emmanuel's School in London, and at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. In 1927 he took an Honours B. A. degree in classics in English, taught for a year at Sherborne Preparatory School for Boys in Dorset, and return to Ridley hall, Cambridge, for theological training. He was ordained in March, 1930, and served his first curacy at St John's Penge, a Southeastern suburb of London. Then after a break of several months due to illness, he worked for a year at freelance journalism and as editorial Secretary of the Pathfinder Press. He returned to parish work as a curate at St. Margaret's, Lee, also in southeast London, in 1936 and he became Vicar of The Church of the Good Shepherd, Lee, in 1940, remaining their until almost the end of the war. During this time his church was destroyed and a great deal of damage was done to the houses and buildings of his parish, fortunately with very little loss of life. It was during this period that he began to write “Letters to Young Churches”, with the sole idea of helping the youth of his parish understand the Epistles of the New Testament. In January 1945 he accepted the living of St John the Evangelist, Red Hill, a large parish, some 20 miles south of London. He worked there for 10 years and saw the parish grow until his responsibility extended to nearly 14,000 people. In January 1955, the Reverend Phillips, on the advice of several bishops, left parish work and went to live in Swanage, a quiet place in Dorset, so that he could devote his time to further translation and writing for the faith, as well as speaking, preaching and occasional broadcasting. During the years he has lived in Swanage he has traveled many thousands of miles to fulfill preaching and lecturing engagements and has also conducted two evangelistic missions, one to the Surrey Parish of Dorking and one to the USAF base at Bentwaters in Suffolk. In 1957 the late Dr G. K. A. Bell, then Bishop of Chichester, made the Reverend Phillips a Prebendary (or Canon) of Chichester Cathedral in recognition of his translational work. He held this position for 2 years, but owing to extreme pressure of other work he felt obligated to resign from it in 1960. The Reverend Phillips has broadcast on all three services of the BBC and has also spoken on their overseas service. He is made two television appearances on the BBC channel and has also broadcast by means of tape recording for the Australian Broadcasting Commission on several occasions. At the invitation of the Presbyterian Churches of Hollywood and Ssacramento, the Reverend Phillips had the privilege of addressing large numbers of young people at the Forest Home Center in California, and at Lake Tahoe. His present work is an attempt to translate for Old Testament prophets into modern English. He has a vast correspondence with all parts of the English speaking world, and can only accept a very small portion of the innumerable request to speak that he constantly receives. The world sales of all of his books exceed four million. J. B. Phillips was married in 1939, and his wife, Vera, does the bulk of his secretarial work. They have one daughter, Jennifer, who was born in 1946. His hobbies are painting, motoring, “hi-fi” reproduction, and the critical watching of television.
