How did humans invent cinema? Movies are now one of the biggest forms of storytelling in the world, but less than 150 years ago, cinema didn’t even exist. There were no film cameras, no movie theatres, and no way to capture the world in motion. In this video, we go back to the very beginning and explore the fascinating history of how cinema was invented, from early optical toys and the first experiments with photography to Eadweard Muybridge capturing motion, George Eastman revolutionising photographic film, and William Kennedy Dickson developing some of the earliest motion-picture technology. We then follow the story to Thomas Edison’s Kinetoscope and finally to the Lumière brothers and the Cinématographe, when moving images were projected before a paying audience and cinema began to take the form we recognise today.
