Measuring Bevel Gears - Adcock & Shipley milling machine restoration (part 5)

Realising that accurate dimensioning of the two bevel gears would help with obtaining the correct gear mesh I set about devising a method to measure the gear teeth. I determined that the vertical bevel gear needs to be moved .013" away from the other centre. To achieve this I make a modified component - the oil spinner. Measurement relies on the use of surface table and custom made gauge pins tapered to fit between the gear teeth. This technique seems to be successful. The real test will be when I reassemble the vertical head in the next video. Apart from the desire to better understand straight cut bevel gears, the reason for going to considerable effort to measure the gears was to obviate the need for tedious trial and error at the fitting stage. Assembly and disassembly of the head was far from straightforward. I hope this video might contain some useful information for someone else who is working on a bevel gear drive - as part of the mill, or some other machine. Comments on the measuring techniques would be much appreciated. There may be simpler methods for achieving the same result.
