Cantor Moshe Koussevitzky (June 9, 1899 - August 23, 1966) is considered one of the greatest Ashkenazi cantors of the 20th century. He was born in Samargon in Belarus, into a musical family - his father Avigdor was a music teacher and his mother Alta a pianist. He took his first steps in the field under the guidance of his younger brother, Yaakov, and the entire family, which included the four brothers of the Koussevitzky family (Moshe, Yaakov, David and Simcha), greatly influenced the world of Jewish singing. In 1920 he began serving as a cantor at the "Sable" Synagogue in Vilnius, and later continued to a senior position in the city's largest synagogue. His talent was soon discovered and he was recognized throughout Europe. In 1927 he was chosen to be the main cantor at the Tłumecka Synagogue in Warsaw, a place where he strengthened his international status under the accompaniment of David Eisenstadt's famous choir. Koussevitzky's visits to Israel in 1934 and 1936 became unforgettable experiences for many, and were received with great enthusiasm. His first appearance in the United States in 1938 at Carnegie Hall in New York was praised, but he preferred to return to Poland. With the outbreak of World War II, he fled to Russia, where he began a career as an opera artist named Mikhail Koussevitzky. He gained fame as a singer, especially in leading roles such as " Boris Goodnov" and "Tosca". After the war, Koussevitzky came to the United States in 1947, and his performances were a huge success. He signed with RCA on a series of recordings, and is considered a central figure in the world of singing in the USA. In 1952, he was appointed as the main cantor of the "Beit El" Synagogue in Borough Park, New York, where he worked until his death from cancer in 1966. His coffin was brought to Israel for burial, on the Mount of Repose in Jerusalem.
