Jay Clayton is testifying before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Wednesday for his long-delayed confirmation hearing to become director of National Intelligence, weeks after President Donald Trump postponed the nomination amid a dispute with Congress over voting legislation. Finding a permanent intelligence chief became a priority after Tulsi Gabbard announced in May that she would step down because of her husband's cancer diagnosis. Clayton, the former chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission and current U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, was nominated after Republicans and Democrats criticized Trump's decision to install Bill Pulte as acting director.
