In this video, we review the normal architecture of sleep in healthy conditions, the stages you go through each night while resting, and the main characteristics of each stage. We also provide a series of tips that will help you optimize your nighttime rest and, therefore, your daytime performance. We're sleeping less and worse all the time. The cost is an increase in metabolic, cardiovascular, and musculoskeletal pathologies, an increase in low-grade chronic inflammation, sky-high cortisol levels, poor concentration, worsening cognitive function, and a decreased overall performance. A poor sleep schedule can undo all your other health efforts. If you're trying to eat well (something that will be more difficult to achieve if you sleep poorly) and exercising properly, but you're not getting enough rest, your body will continue to send warning signals: something isn't working right. We need to understand what optimal rest means for humans, how the body responds to natural cycles of light and dark, how we rest, how we can use light and darkness to our advantage, how technology and Western lifestyles interfere with proper rest, and how suboptimal rest is related to developmental diseases: cancer, obesity, cardiovascular disease, etc. The fascinating field of chronobiology addresses all of this.
