How Can China Rebalance Its Economy? A Policy Playbook
January 6, 2026 — This event marks the first episode of “The Year of Rebalancing?”, a new webinar series from the Asia Society Policy Institute’s Center for China Analysis (CCA) examining the progress, policy levers, and constraints shaping China’s shift toward stronger domestic demand. As Beijing elevates rebalancing to a top economic priority for 2026, the series situates China’s adjustment within a broader set of structural challenges, including persistent supply–demand imbalances, trade frictions, and the aftermath of the property-market winddown and local government financing strains. Moderated by CCA Fellow Lizzi C. Lee, the opening episode takes a playbook approach to rebalancing, examining which policy tools matter most, how they interact, and where the key constraints lie. Featuring Weijian Shan, executive chairman and co-founder of PAG, the discussion spans currency dynamics, fiscal and social policy, capital allocation, and institutional reform. The conversation focuses on trade-offs, sequencing, and uncertainty, and considers what China’s rebalancing choices could mean for the global economy. (43 min., 14 sec.)
