Instruments: Zorya Brass Band History: Simon Vasylovych Petliura, actually Semen Vasylovych Petliura (10 May 1879, Poltava, Russian Empire - 25 May 1926, Paris, France) was a Ukrainian statesman, military and political figure, publicist, literary and theatre critic. He was a descendant of an ancient Cossack family. Organiser of the Ukrainian armed forces. Member of the General Secretariat of the Ukrainian Central Rada as Secretary General for Military Affairs (28 June - 31 December 1917). Political prisoner under the rule of Pavlo Skoropadskyi (27 July - 12 November 1918). Chief Ataman of the troops of the Ukrainian People's Republic (UPR) (from November 1918). 2nd Chairman of the UPR Directorate (9 May 1919 - 10 November 1920). A fighter for Ukraine's independence in the twentieth century. Maternal uncle of Patriarch Mstyslav (Skrypnyk). He is a national hero of Ukraine.
