He was a descendant of an ancient Cossack family. Organiser of the Ukrainian armed forces. Member of the General Secretariat of the Ukrainian Central Rada as Secretary General for Military Affairs (28 June - 31 December 1917). Political prisoner under the rule of Pavlo Skoropadskyi (27 July - 12 November 1918). Chief Ataman of the troops of the Ukrainian People's Republic (UPR) (from November 1918). 2nd Chairman of the UPR Directorate (9 May 1919 - 10 November 1920). A fighter for Ukraine's independence in the twentieth century. Maternal uncle of Patriarch Mstyslav (Skrypnyk). He is a national hero of Ukraine.
