My Top 5 Lessons Learned From Olympic Javelin Throwers

I've had the privilege of working alongside and learning from over a dozen Olympic-level javelin throwers in my coaching career. In this video I break down the 5 biggest technique and training lessons I've taken away from those conversations β€” things that changed how I coach and how I think about the throw. These aren't pulled from YouTube clips or coaching textbooks. They came from real conversations at camp, at JavFest, at the Olympic Trials, and on my podcast β€” from the throwers themselves. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ πŸ“Œ CHAPTERS ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 0:00 Intro 1:10 Thomas Roller 3:55 Julian Weber 4:55 Curtis Thompson 6:35 Tom Pukstys 7:20 Kara Winger ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🎯 THE 5 LESSONS ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Thomas Roller explained why elite throwers move away from power cleans as they age. The deep elbow catch position stresses the throwing arm β€” same reason most baseball pitchers don't power clean. The overhead snatch gives you all the CNS and triple-extension benefits without that elbow risk. Julian Weber broke his thumb and was forced to switch to fork grip β€” then threw over 91 meters. Fork grip isn't just for beginners. At the elite level, if you can control the javelin, you can generate excellent rotation with fork grip. Curtis Thompson (the top US men's thrower) taught me: stop obsessing over slow-motion video. Watching at full speed is where you feel the energy transfer. Slow-mo locks you into positions instead of patterns. Tom Pukstys corrected a cue I'd been teaching wrong for years. "Active block side" doesn't mean ripping your left arm down β€” that pulls your throwing arm in early. Keep the block arm long and closed, hit the block strong, and your throwing side will rotate naturally against it. Kara Winger threw a 68m PR in her late 30s after tearing her ACL twice. The block leg isn't a hard stop β€” it's a deceleration that initiates the throw. What matters most is energy transfer through the block. A slightly bent block leg that transfers well beats a perfectly straight one that doesn't. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ πŸš€ READY TO THROW FARTHER? ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Velocity is the program I built for throwers who want to put all of this into practice πŸ‘‰ https://www.jackedjavelin.com/velocity #javelin #trackandfield #javelinthrow #olympicjavelin #javelincoach
