Government gives OFFICIAL UPDATE on ‘TRAGIC’ train collision as 53 remain in hospital

Eight individuals remain in hospital fighting for their lives following a train collision in Bedfordshire. Over 100 people were rushed to hospital and a major incident was declared on Friday (June 19) after two trains collided near Elstow. Emergency services were alerted shortly after 5.15pm to reports that two East Midlands Railway trains had crashed. Officers from British Transport Police (BTP), Bedfordshire Police, the National Police Air Service, along with local fire and ambulance crews, rushed to the scene. The BTP confirmed on Monday evening that 53 people remained hospitalised, with eight in critical condition. However, officers have indicated this figure is "likely to continue to change" as the situation develops. The driver of one train, 60-year-old Shaun Burton, lost his life in the collision. His family said in a police statement: "We are devastated by his loss. Our thoughts are also with those affected by this incident."
