WILL THOSE RECEIVING INSS BENEFITS HAVE TO PROVIDE BIOMETRIC DATA? Many people woke up startled by the news that INSS (Brazilian National Social Security Institute) has started requiring biometrics for retirement, pensions, benefits, and BPC/LOAS (Brazilian Social Assistance Benefit). But calm down. Most people don't need to rush to do anything. I'll explain what has really changed. WHO WILL NEED BIOMETRIC DATA? The new rule expands the requirement for biometric identification for those applying for INSS benefits. The goal is to combat fraud and ensure that the benefit is paid to the right person. Biometrics can be verified through existing records in official databases, such as: • National Identity Card (CIN); • Voter Registration Card; • National Driver's License (CNH); • and other official databases of the Federal Government. Before rushing to register again, check if you already have registered biometrics. DO THOSE ALREADY RECEIVING RETIREMENT BENEFITS NEED TO REGISTER THEIR BIOMETRICS NOW? No. This is the most important information. Those already receiving retirement, pension, assistance, or BPC (Brazilian social security benefit) will not have their benefits automatically blocked. The implementation will be gradual, and there will be a transition period. Do not believe messages saying that your benefit will be canceled immediately due to lack of biometrics. WHO IS EXEMPT FROM BIOMETRICS? The ordinance itself provides for several exceptions. Among them: • people over 80 years old; • those living abroad; • migrants and refugees; • people unable to travel due to health reasons; • residents of hard-to-reach locations; • and, in certain situations, applicants for maternity leave, disability benefits, and survivor's pensions. Each situation has its own rules. Therefore, it is important to check if you fall under any exemption category. WHAT IF I DON'T HAVE ANY BIOMETRIC DATA? Anyone who does not yet have any biometric registration must obtain their National Identity Card within the schedule established by the Federal Government. The implementation will be done in stages. This means there is still time to regularize the situation. Don't leave it until the last minute. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS CHANGE? According to the Federal Government, the measure seeks to reduce fraud and increase security in the granting of social security and welfare benefits. But be aware: this does not mean that everyone needs to have their biometrics taken again. In most cases, the biometrics you already have will be used. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS NOT TO FALL FOR SCAMS Whenever changes occur at INSS (Brazilian National Institute of Social Security), scammers also appear saying that it is necessary to pay fees or click on links to update registration. INSS does not send messages charging payment for biometric registration.
