What Fineliners to Use with Copic? / Mixing #Copic with Black Ink
If you use Copic markers (or other alcohol markers like Blick or Ouhu), you may find yourself wondering what black fineliners are safe to use. Every time I work with Copic, I run into this question. I've seen lots of tests, and I think it is really important to test on the paper you will be using. There is also a difference in how certain colors react to black. What you don't want to happen though is to draw your portrait (or whatever!) and then add alcohol marker and have your black lines bleed or lift and muddy your marker color. I tested a number of pens in this video - all on index card, which is what I'll be using for the summer Index-Card-a-Day Challenge (ICAD). It's an imperfect medium to begin with, so Copic markers AND my regular pens or fountain pens and ink don't always work quite the same as they do in my favorite sketchbook, on Bristol board, or on drawing paper. That's why testing is critical! I tested: Uni-Pin, Pitt Pen, Micron, Copic fineliner, fountain pen with Platinum Carbon Black, Zig, two Staedtlers, and Zebra and Pentel pens that I sometimes use to fill in larger sections of color. *Note - there are a few spots of flicker/repeat near the beginning. Just overlook them! 00:00 Introduction 01:48 Index-Card-a-Day art on index cards (manilla vs white) 04:55 Four top picks I'm especially looking at in testing 06:36 Approach I am using for this swatch testing 07:20 Copic types (Sketch and Ciao) 08:30 Uni-Pin 10:22 Pit Pen 11:11 Micron 11:39 Fountain pen with Platinum Carbon Ink 12:59 Copic multiliner 13:27 Staedtler Pigment Liner 13:55 Staedtler Triplus 14:30 Zig 14:55 Remember to let your black dry 5-10 minutes!!! 15:15 Zebra and Pentel 16:58 Copic swatch 17:47 Copic on top of fineliner (V04) 18:58 Over Uni-Pin 19:28 Over Pitt Pen 19:42 Over Micron 22:45 Not a bad outcome! 22:55 Yellow over top of fineliner (Y08) 24:38 Layering two colors of Copic over fineliner (RV52 and Y17) 26:42 Fineliner on top of Copic 28:00 Analysis and final thoughts #ICAD #copicmarkers #sketching #drawing #penandink Music: Happiness, courtesy of Bensound.com --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 📰 Follow the Illustrated Life Substack https://illustratedlife.substack.com 🎙 Creativity Matters Podcast https://creativitymatterspodcast.com/ 🎨 oamyoamy at Instagram: / oamyoamy ✒ Tools and Materials: These are affiliate links that help support the Creativity Matters Podcast. 🖊 Micron pens .01 https://amzn.to/2R5PCrA Micron assorted https://amzn.to/2R9sVq8 Copic markers: https://amzn.to/3fSoA2V Ouhu alcohol markers: https://amzn.to/3fx3gRu Uni-Pin: https://amzn.to/3wG2DuC Copic Multiliner: https://amzn.to/2RTiGGA Pentel Fude Touch Sign: https://amzn.to/3g0Amsa Thick white index cards: https://amzn.to/2TuHmFZ ⭐ Patreon: / creativitymatters ☕ Ko-Fi: http://ko-fi.com/B0B57RGH
