#lowkey session 19 : FUGŌ

We hope FUGŌ becomes big. Their blend of indie and french pop means that we don't have to depend on the Phum Viphurits and Boy Pablos of the world for our fix. And if you're one of those who eschew local bands mimicking their foreign influences and singing in English, FUGŌ has no problem singing in Bahasa Melayu when the song is right. Moon & The Sun is a delectable tune that can fit into any Phum set. This isn't a comparison - it is evidence and a reminder. We love our Phums, so why can't we do the same for FUGŌ? The song's simple yet tasteful charms cannot be ignored. Popular in local gigs, it has hit mainstream radio airwaves and made it into playlists all over the country. The studio version featuring Bil Musa's luscious and enchanting vocals is just the band treating us extra. This isn't even the best thing about FUGŌ. Lagu Balada Kala Hujan is another side of them we hope to see more of. The evocative intro took us back decades like a time machine, with Hakim's soft touch on the trumpet a patient guide. It reminds us of Noh Salleh's critically acclaimed Angin Kencang EP. Lagu Balada Kala Hujan was part of FUGŌ's self-titled debut EP in 2021, where Men I Trust was a notable influence in their songwriting. It adds so much dimension to their sound, and is the point where they begin to distance themselves from the Boy Pablo and Phum Viphurit comparisons. Suria Di Atas Suria is the the band bringing all these elements and influences together, an underrated song understandably overshadowed by the other two songs. FUGŌ came out just before the COVID-19 pandemic started. It set them back a little bit, but the silver lining was Moon & The Sun becoming the viral hit it deserves to be. Their artistry is evident - from Hakim's burgeoning promise as a consummate all-round frontman to Fai's breaks and rolls, FUGŌ has the chops to not just come up with more potential indie classics for the Malaysian indie scene, but also taking us one step closer to our own Sore.
